Why spin?

Spin Class for Cardio? Yes please!

Who wouldn’t like to burn 400 calories in a cardio session? One spin class can average 40 minutes, which is like a 15–18 mile ride outside cycling. Spin classes can be anywhere from 20 minutes minimum to 75 minutes maximum. If you commit yourself to a routine of a 40 minute spin class, preferably 1-2 times a week, you will get the calorie and fat burn you want.

At your first spin class, arrive a few minutes early to get familiar with the bikes, learn some terms that the instructor will use, check out the layout of class and get the bike you are comfortable on to make your first class a success. Remember, the seats are not always comfortable, but don’t let that be the reason you give up on spin. Your booty will get use to it! If not, there are pads, bike shorts, or seats you can get to make your tush a little more comfortable. Also I highly suggest not wearing short shorts… EEEEKKK! Big mistake by me several times, even after 8 years of teaching spin. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and maybe even ask other participants about different instructors to fit the style of bike ride you will like. Instructors make a WORLD of difference! I highly suggest finding a great instructor to keep you motivated! Regardless, make sure they are knowledgeable, not only about spin, but cardio, safety, and fitness all together.

Keep in mind there are a wide variety of how spin classes can be taught. Anywhere from style, technique, music, light, dancing, lifting light weights, and teaching skills.

You can expect warm-up exercises to prepare your body and muscles for the bikes. The warm up exercises work on various muscles of your body to ensure that you do not have injuries resulting from pedaling the bikes. Some instructors go for mileage, intensity levels or simply cardio intensity levels. Keep in mind it is your workout so you can go at your own level of fitness to meet your fitness goals. Depending on what style of class will depend on how sore or what muscles you will use! Keep in mind spin is primarily about cardio and cardio endurance. It is secondarily about muscle strength.

Most spin class bikes usually come with instructions and labels. Read through to know what each part and label represents before you start cycling. Go for a bike that fits your personality and has features that are easy to understand.

Above all else have the most fun while you workout. You will be more successful and more likely to come back for more classes!
